New Schools Approved in the 2nd Ward

New Schools Approved in the 2nd Ward

On October 22, 2008, the Chicago Board of Education approved 12 schools to open in fall, 2009, including several that will impact the Second Ward. Alderman Fioretti has had a representative serving on the East Garfield Park committee reviewing new schools for that area, and two were chosen on October 22:

1) Urban Preparatory Academy for Young Men in East Garfield Park, a contract high school, will be the first new school based on the existing model at Urban Prep Charter Academy, CPS's first all-boys school. It will offer a college-prep environment through strong academic support and experiences that nuture the whole student. The location is yet to be determined, and may be in the Second Ward. The performance of Urban Prep has been outstanding in the way that it has supported its students, and Alderman Fioretti is hopeful that this new school will provide students with the kind of environment that will discourage violence in our community and will help more of our boys to go to college.

2) Garfield Park Preparatory Academy is a contract grammar school
operated by the Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and it will
focus on educating the whole child through state-of-the-art practices
that support acdemic success. The school will also integrate a
research-based approach to instruction from Columbia University. The school will be located in East Garfield Park at a location yet to be
determined, possibly in the Second Ward.
In addition, Noble Street Charter School, Bulls campus, is a charter
school that will offer students throughout the City a rigorous
college-prep environment and receive financial support from the ChicagoBulls. The school's location is yet to be determined, possibly in the Second Ward
