35th Street Bridge Project
4th Ward Office
35th St. Bridge Presentation Minutes
Alderman Toni Preckwinkle greeted the attendees and apologized for leaving early. Introductions were made and Dan Burk engineer with CDOT started a video presentation with voice over. The video lasted for 5-7 minutes. Afterwards the presenter provided some facts regarding the 35th St. Bridge.
The bridge will have a landscaped plaza on the west side, complete with sloped grade ascending to the entry of the bridge. The plaza will include the existing street adjacent to the structure at the end of 35th st. This plaza will offer seating, with a patio type setting for the public. It will be well lit with a beautiful view of the lighted bridge. Lake park will become diagonal parking on the east side of the street to compensate for parking eliminated from the end of 35th St. The bridge will be 20ft in width, with a curve shape, this was done to give the structure character & dimension. It will be a single suspension, concrete structure. At the east side of the bridge will be a similar descending path to the walk/bike path, this path will lead to the parks highest point where a 80x60 plaza will be constructed with limestone from 51st street “recycled”. This plaza will provide a vista point and seating for the public.
They are looking to start construction in fall 2008. Cost is estimated at 15 million dollars. The funds will come from state and federal. Construction time will be 18 months, this will closed the bridge for that duration.
There will be another 35th bridge presentation on November 14th 2007, 7pm at 6th Grace Presbyterian Church, 600 E. 35th St. for more info call 773-536-8103.
