CSA has been talk about in THE GAP for over a year. Our April, 2010 meeting. Yesenia Villasenor-Rodriguez presented, and we are inviting our surround neighbors to share in the opportunity.

Sweet Earth Organic Farm will be present their offering to the GAP Organization May 4, 2010 at there monthly meeting room 1201 at Illinois College of Optometry 3242 S. Indiana at 7:15 p.m. This is your opportunity to Be Part of a CSA. What is a CSA? CSA is short for Community Shared Agriculture.

CSAs are Part of the New Local Food Movement. Its a way to bring communities and farmers together so that people know more about how and where their food is grown and the farmers know who their customers are! Its an investment in people, the earth, communities, and your health!

Did you know that over 90% of the food consumed by Illinois residents does not come from Illinois or local communities. Yes, astounding given how much "agriculture" is in Illinois.

The way CSAs work is that the CSA members pay an upfront fee to receive weekly produce that will be delivered here to the GAP approximately from the farmer beginning the last week of June through the last week of October.

The GAP selected Sweet Earth Organic Farms (certified organic farm since 1974) to present. It is owned by Farmer (because farmess is not a word) Renee.

Dear Friends:
The National Bar Association is seeking applicants for the Crump Law Camp which was established for students entering the 9th through 11th grades and between the ages of 14 and 17 to introduce them to the judicial system.

The goal of the NBA camp is to encourage young people at an early age to become lawyers and seek legal careers in the future. By 2050 more than half of the people in this country will be of color. More than 90% of the nations lawyers are white, as are more than 80% of the students enrolled in law school. Yet more than 30% of the United States is comprised of people of color.

The NBA is seeking applicants to attend this camp from every ethnic group and its selection process is non-discriminatory.

The first inaugural two week camp was held during the summer at Howard University School of Law through a grant by the Ford Motor Company Fund in 2001. Campers were and will be housed on the Howard University campus and live in a protected camp environment.

Open enrollment is available to students across the country but emphasis will be on enabling students from low income families to attend. Tuition for the camp will vary depending upon family income.

The tuition covers transportation to and from Washington , D.C. ; housing; meals; educational materials; and expenses for field trips. The camp provides students with an exciting academic and social agenda in the Washington , D. C. area.

The competitive highlight of the camp is the Evett L. Simmons Mock Trial Competition. The four winners of this competition are invited to the NBAs Annual Convention.

This one is pretty slick since they provide YOU with all the information, except the one piece they want.
Note, the callers do not ask for your card number; they already have it...
This information is worth reading. By understanding how the VISA & Master Card Telephone Credit Card Scam works, you'll be better prepared to protect yourself.One of our employees was called on Wednesday from 'VISA', and I was called on Thursday from 'Master Card'..
The scam works like this: Caller: 'This is (name), and I'm calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA. My Badge number is 12460.
Your card has been flagged for an unusual purchase pattern, and I'm calling to verify. This would be on your VISA card which was issued by (name of bank).. Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing Device for $497.99 from a Marketing company based in ?
'When you say 'No', the caller continues with, 'Then we will be issuing a credit to your account.
This is a company we have been watching and the charges range from $297 to $497, just under the $500 purchase pattern that flags most cards. Before your next statement, the credit will be sent to (gives you your address), is that correct?'You say 'yes'.
The caller continues - 'I will be starting a Fraud investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1- 800 number listed on the back of your card (1-800 -VISA) and ask for Security.'You will need to refer to this Control Number. The caller then gives you a 6 digit number.

'Do you need me to read it again?'Here's the IMPORTANT part on how the scam works. The caller then says, 'I need to verify you are in possession of your card'. He'll ask you to 'turn your card over and look for some numbers'.
There are 7 numbers; the first 4 are part of your card number, the next 3 are the security Numbers that verify you are the possessor of the card. These are the numbers you sometimes use to make Internet purchases to prove you have the card.
The caller will ask you to read the 3 numbers to him. After you tell the caller the 3 numbers,
he'll say, 'That is correct, I just needed to verify that the card has not been lost or stolen, and that you still have your card. Do you have any other questions?' After you say No,
the caller then thanks you and states, 'Don't hesitate to call back if you do, and hangs up..You actually say very little, and they never ask for or tell you the Card number..
But after we were called on Wednesday, we called back within 20 minutes to ask a question.. Are we glad we did! The REAL VISA Security Department told us it was a scam and in the last 15 minutes a new purchase of $497.99 was charged to our card.
Long story - short - we made a real fraud report and closed the VISA account. VISA is reissuing us a new number. What the scammers want is the 3-digit PIN number on the back of the card Don't give it to them.
Instead, tell them you'll call VISA or Master card directly for verification of their conversation. The real VISA told us that they will never ask for anything on the card as they already know the information since they issued the card! If you give the scammers your 3 Digit PIN Number, you think you're receiving a credit.
However, by the time you get your statement you'll see charges for purchases you didn't make, and by then it's almost too late and/or more difficult to actually file a fraud report.

What makes this more remarkable is that on Thursday, I got a call from a 'Jason Richardson of Master Card' with a word-for-word repeat of the VISA scam. This time I didn't let him finish. I hung up! We filed a police report, as instructed by VISA. The police said they are taking several of these reports daily! They also urged us to tell everybody we know that this scam is happening.
Please pass this on to all your family, friends and neighbors. By informing each other, we protect each other.

Dear fellow resident: In June 2009, I signed an agreement with GeoVax Labs, Inc. This proposal was a cooperative agreement between Cook County, through the Health and Hospitals System, and the Core Center Foundation and Geovax. It was solely designed to advance the fight against HIV/AIDS by accelerating the clinical trials of preventative and therapeutic vaccines developed by GeoVax scientists. The agreement called for GeoVax to hold the tests at the Ruth M. Rothstein CORE Center, an HIV/AIDS clinic on the city's west side.

Unfortunately, the CORE Foundation, which runs the outpatient center, turned the proposal down. Foundation officials do not want the vaccine trials at the CORE Center. It is my hope that, with input from the community, we can urge the CORE Foundation to rethink and, ultimately, reverse their decision. The GeoVax vaccine has shown great success in the prevention and treatment of HIV in earlier trials. My complete focus now is on allowing Cook County residents infected with the HIV virus to have access to the second phase of this trial. I feel this drug will give hope to many who have or those that are at risk of getting the virus. Therefore, I am holding a community meeting to discuss ways in which we can work together to educate the CORE Foundation and Cook County residents on the benefits of this vaccine trial.

I will personally be present to discuss what the original agreement was and address any concerns you may have on the clinical trial.

61st Street Farmers Market Opens for Second Year on May 16th

Woodlawn, Chicago - On May 16th, the 61st Street Farmers Market will open for its second season on 61st Street between Blackstone and Dorchester Avenues. After a great first year, the 61st Street Farmers Market is kicking off its second season with twice as many vendors, live music, chef demonstrations, a market school, and fun for the whole family. Each Saturday from 9AM to 2PM, shoppers can purchase local sustainable fruits, vegetables, dairy products, eggs, meats, baked goods, flowers, and plants. The vendors include local favorites like Bruno's Organics, Ellis Family Farms, Genesis Growers, Growing Power, Medici of 57th, River Valley Ranch and Tomato Mountain. Other vendors will be selling local organic baby food, prepared vegan meals, crepes and much more.

On opening day, master gardener Julia Govis will be selling seedlings and giving gardening advice for those with a green thumb.

At 10:30, Chef Charles Bagnerise from the Parrot Cage restaurant will be doing a live cooking demonstration and tasting. And Real Men Cook will be at the market spreading the word about their 20th Anniversary Fathers' Day Celebration - the largest Fathers' Day celebration in the nation. The 61st Street Farmers Market is a program of the Experimental Station (a 501c3 nonprofit organization). The Shared Cost Sidewalk program reopened to participants on Jan. 1st 2009. Last year the program reached capacity and CDOT was no longer able to accept new applicants.

For the 2009 program, applicants will be accepted on a first-come, first served basis. Applications will only be accepted via the 311 system. Paper applications will no longer be used in this program, to ensure first-come, first served processing.

As in previous years, we expect that demand will exceed the program's capacity.
